2024 POWER OF WOMEN IN DAIRYING DINNER
Holstein Australia has once again proudly sponsored the Power of Women in Dairying event held at International Dairy Week, which is in its 9th year. Our sponsorship plays a vital role in allowing for the Power of Women to offer a scholarship to a woman in the Dairy industry to attend the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 2023, this scholarship was awarded to Emmalea Wishart of Rowlands Park Holsteins in Cohuna, Victoria in the North-West Victorian Sub Branch.
The 2024 Power of Women in Dairying Dinner featured guest speaker Donor and Partnerships Director at the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF); who shared her personal story navigating her Mum, Mandy’s journey with Ovarian Cancer.
Georgie’s key message to women in the dairy industry is to stop putting the cows and farm ahead of their own health. As a dairy farmer calls in the vet in the instance a cow is ill or seems ‘off’, Georgie encourages women to do the same for themselves.
The symptoms of ovarian cancer are so vague – for many women, the only signs are cramps, bloating, feeling full or needing to urinate more often – all symptoms which mimic common female complaints.
Ovarian cancer does not yet have a detection test and currently around 70% of women are diagnosed in the advanced stages, meaning only around 29% of these women are expected to survive beyond give years.
Further information regarding the detection, diagnosis and treatment of Ovarian Cancer can be found here.
Holstein Australia would also like to congratulate Mrs Winsome Anderson, who become the 9th woman to be awarded the Bette Hall Award; an acknowledgement of her outstanding lifelong contribution to the Jersey breed.
