Congratulations to all finalists and winners of the 2024 Semex Holstein Australia All Australian Photographic competition. Check out all the details of each class, including judges’ comments and photos.

All-Australian Heifer Class

Judges’ comments: Our winner we feel excels in overall balance. She wins on her femininity of head and openness of nostril. 2^nd over 3^rd on the sweep to her fore and rear rib. 3^rd over 4^th on her refinement of dewlap and brisket. 4^th over 5^th, a larger heifer showing more strength of cannon bone than 5^th. 5^th over 6^th. The 5^th heifer looks more comfortable showing a more desirable head carriage.

Senior Yearling DRY (under 15 months)

Judges’ comments: We feel a clear winner in this class. A heifer that excels in Dairy strength and overall balance. She places over 2^nd on more length and sweep to her rib. 2^nd over 3^rd on length of neck and strength through the head. 3rd wins on her femininity and cleanness throughout. 4^th over 5^th displays greater depth of heel. 5^th over 6^th on maturity, greater spring and depth of fore rib.

Senior Yearling DRY (over 15 months)

Judges’ comments: Tremendous heifer to win this class, so much power and length. She goes over 2^nd on her silkiness of hide and length over 2^nd.  2^nd over 3^rd this heifer shows greater strength of head and length of neck.  This 3^rd heifer attracted all the judges for her openness and dairy character. She goes over 4^th on the cleanness throughout. 4^th over 5^th just cleaner again. 5^th over 6^th. We admire the front end of this heifer and that’s where she wins over 6^th who has a tremendous blending of neck on to the shoulder back onto the rib cage.

2 Years In Milk (under 30 months)

Judges’ comments: This is a beautiful class of junior milking cows. The winner wins on capacity and texture of udder. 2^nd over 3^rd wins with a nicer shape of teat and length of rump over 3^rd. 3^rd over 4^th, this cow displays better strength through her front and snugness of front udder. The 4^th cow oozes milk. It’s her cleanness that places her over 5^th. 5^th over 6^th shows better quality of udder texture and cleanness throughout.

2 Years In Milk (over 30 months)

Judges’ comments: Two cows head this class which we feel are beautiful examples of the breed. The winner we feel just shows a little more cleanness and Dairy character throughout. 2^nd over 3^rd was on her snugness of udder and better shape of teat. 3^rd over 4^th wins on strength through her front end. The judges enjoyed the challenge of placing the 4^th cow given the angle of shot. The heifer in the 4^th, we admire for her scale capacity and quality of udder. She goes over 5^th on being better balanced who shows more capacity of udder over 6^th. 5^th also shows more capacity through her mid-section and snugness of udder.

3 Year Old In Milk

Judges’ comments: What a tremendous class of 3 yr olds. 25 entries in total had our judges thinking. The winner quickly made her way to the top. This cow displays so much dairy strength, balance and capacity of udder. She places over our 2^nd cow having greater strength and more spring and depth of fore rib. This 2^nd cow has quite an advantage over the 3^rd for her cleanness and quality throughout, showing more bloom to her udder. 3^rd over 4^th wins on capacity of rear udder. 4^th over 5^th shows more strength than 5^th. 5^th over 6^th shows greater dairy character, openness of rib and breed character through the head. A tremendous class of cows.

4 Year Old In Milk

Judges’ comments: The All Australian 4yr old winner exemplifies everything we want in an Australian Dairy cow. She shows a lot of scale with dairy strength, showing tremendous quality of udder. 2^nd over 3^rd very similar cows, however, the 2^nd cow is more desirable through her front udder and cleaner through the leg. 3^rd over 4^th wins on depth of flank and dairy character. 4^th over 5^th shows as more youthful with more snugness of udder. 5^th over 6^th shows a snugger udder and more power through her front end and greater strength through her cannon bone.

5 Year Old In Milk

Judges’ comments: Our winning All Australian 5 yr old shows a tremendous will to milk. She is cleaner than our 2^nd place throughout, showing greater depth to her heel and quality of udder. 2^nd over 3^rd is just so much more cow. She also displays more width to her rear udder. 3^rd over 4^th shows more bloom to udder, spring to fore rib and breed character through her head. 4^th over 5^th is a closer placing, 4^th shows more maturity and venation of udder than 5^th. 5^th wins over 6^th on Dairy character and snugness of udder.

6 Years & Over In Milk

Judges’ comments: The All Australian 6 yr old shows a great pair of cows at the top.  We went with the winner for her overall length. She’s also a little wider at the top of the rear udder than 2^nd. 2^nd over 3^rd shows more maturity and spring of her rib. 3^rd over 4^th wins on her snugness of fore udder and cleanness through the rump. 4^th over 5^th shows great venation over this great framed cow in 5^th. 5^th wins over 6^th showing greater bloom and capacity of udder. She has a tremendous overall length of frame over 6^th.
