Take your livestock management to the next level
Holstein Australia’s new Tissue Sampling Ear Tags (TSUs) are now available to order.
Launched at this year’s Victorian Winter Fair, Holstein Australia TSUs provide a quick, easy and reliable way for farmers to insert an ear tag and take a DNA sample in one step, according to CEO Rohan Butler.
“These tissue sampling ear tags provide a seamless, minimally invasive method for collecting high-quality DNA samples, enabling breeders to make data-driven decisions and enhance the productivity and health of their herd.
“The product takes an ear punch for genomic testing, and simultaneously leaves an ear tag in the resulting notch-hole,” says Rohan. “This sampling method is more user-friendly, and much quicker than traditional tail hair sampling, which can be less than straightforward and prone to cross-contamination between samples.
“We’ve been developing this product with German company Caisley for the last 18 months. We know from our field trials in Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia that our TSUs help enhance genetic management, improve animal welfare and disease control, and streamline operations.”
Key Benefits
Members who carried out field trials with Holstein Australia reported a number of benefits in comparison with their usual DNA collection procedures and ear tags.
- Speed and efficiency – the ability to collect samples in seconds with minimal animal distress
- Cost savings – reduced labour and testing costs with efficient sample collection and processing
- Integrated identification – accurate traceability with unique barcoding
- High quality data – reliable genetic and health information
Glomar Holsteins Justin Johnston found the ear tags easy to use and accurate record keeping straightforward with the calf number on both the ear tag and tissue sampling unit.
“The whole process was easy. Applying the ear tag and being able to take a high quality DNA sample in one step saved a lot of time – two jobs in one – rather than tagging our calves and having to go back at a later date for a sample. The tags are also great quality and stay where they’re meant to – we haven’t lost any yet!
“What also worked well for us was the barcode and animal ID panel on both the ear tag and sample tube. It just made it really simple to sort out while we were tagging the cows and back in the farm office.”

The HA TSU ear tags come in a range of colours and can be printed with the Holstein Australia logo, HA cow and Prefix or with just a farm name or Prefix in addition to the ID number. Full details on the order form.
The tags are available in packs of 10 at $70 + GST per pack, and packs of 50 at the special introductory price of $250 + GST per pack (regular price $325 + GST). One off cost for an applicator is $100 + GST. Shipping of tags and applicator is included within the price.
Why should I change to Holstein Australia TSU ear tags?
Enhanced Genetic Management - Our TSUs allow for precise DNA collection, providing high-quality genetic information. This data is crucial for genomic testing, helping to identify superior genetics within your herd. By selecting the best animals for breeding you can Improve milk production, disease resistance, and overall herd quality.
Improved Animal Traceability - Holstein Australia TSUs are equipped with a unique 2D barcode and ID panel, ensuring each tissue sample is securely linked to the correct animal. This feature integrates seamlessly with existing management tags, enhances traceability and ensures that all genetic and health information is accurately recorded and easily accessible.
Disease Monitoring and Management - These tags enable early detection of diseases such as Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV). Early identification and management of infected animals helps prevent the spread of diseases, ensuring the overall health of your herd and minimising economic losses.
Operational Efficiency - The process of collecting tissue samples using Holstein Australia TSUs is quick and minimally invasive, causing less stress to animals. This efficiency saves time and labour costs compared to traditional blood or hair sampling methods and maximises animal welfare.
Reliable Sample Quality - The tissue samples collected are preserved in a specially designed medium that maintains DNA integrity, ensuring reliable and accurate laboratory results. This reduces the risk of contamination and ensures the highest quality data for your herd management decisions.
Informed Herd Management - Access to detailed genetic and health data allows you to make informed decisions about breeding, culling, and treatment strategies. This data-driven approach helps in optimising herd performance and productivity.
Reduced Costs - The high-quality DNA samples collected with our TSUs reduces the need for retesting, which lowers laboratory processing costs. This cost-effectiveness makes it a financially viable option for large-scale herd management.
